Creativity and Depression

The title to this article would appear as opposites, an oxy-moron in nature, yet creativity and depression work simultaneously in many people. Why do we see a great amount of artists and creative people experience full on sets and bouts of depression is a question that has psychiatrists and the medical profession up in arms.
I have given great thought to this matter for some time now and not that I am a medical doctor nor a psychiatrist, I am aware of life and energy around me and feel as tho I,  and anyone else who feels the flux of energy are authorities from within their own experiences.
Many famous artists and writers have experienced terrible bouts of severe depression. Sadly enough, some who have taken great strides to cure themselves in a less positive manner resulting in fatal outcomes. Before medications were introduced to the population to help curve or stabilize the onsets of depression, history of artists and writers were left up to their own devises usually ending up on a grand scale of failure.
Our world today has learned that we, humans, life in general has changed rapidly and for the creative person, who is typically ultra sensitive to life around them find themselves confused with these changes and feeling a state of loss or sometimes hopelessness. Trying to create art in whatever degree we create in becomes almost unmanageable. The creative gene in us does not disappear when these changes take place, they are still there.. it's the rest of our being that tries to catch up to the ongoing energy changes taking place around us at great speeds.
Personal circumstances in someones life can also add to the equation as we are trying to grasp and hold on to a blade of grass just to keep ourselves afloat. This compounds the onsets and adds to the balance and chemical changes in our bodies.
Creative people have found many ways to either overcome, work through, or place their creativity on hold until their whole being becomes somewhat workable again. The time frame for this is never same for anyone. One person may be able to accomplish this task in a short time, and others may take much longer.
I have learned that life is made up of energy, so are us humans.. this being the case, with all the atmospheric changes that are taking place, hotter days in parts of the country, storm cells, earthquakes in places that have not recorded them is such magnitudes before, change our energy structure and sensitivities to everything around us.
Energy is like a grid system, if you were to see energy you would see a constant flux and flow of a grid in constant movement. With some area's of the grid becoming wider and some areas becoming smaller and tight lines. Energy also creates amazing patterns that harmoniously work with our physical energy. These patterns can work closely with us, or at times against us.
I don't know if we will ever have an indefinite  answer to resolve these issues, as far as I see it,  we just learn to adapt as we move on in life and find what works for us until it no longer works then we  find something that works for us differently when the new changes take place.   It's an ongoing cycle of energetic changes.
Let's talk about patterns for a moment. We have a colossal amount of shapes that create patterns in energy. I have taught myself to look beyond and outside of the box to assist myself with patterns and art. If I were to gaze out to a grouping of tree's let's say, I would squint my eyes, looking for shapes that feel comfortable to me. I may see some triangles, I may see some rectangles, even some circles. I try to focus on those patterns for a moment and look at the different colors in those patterns that I see. If I am at a loss in my artistic nature, I will allow the energy of life to assist me. I use it as my self help guide to get me going again.
After gazing for a moment or two I find the patterns that I seem to focus on at that particular moment and I see the shades of color that are inside those patterns, I will use those in my art work and allow that creativity to flow. It's like life handed me a guide and I am just translating my perception from the tree's. A person can so this with anything. A group of flowers, rocks, buildings, cars, people, etc etc.
Is this the end all be all answer to creative block due to depression, no it's not, it's just a helping hand upward and onward to get us past those moments when nothing makes sense and you are at a great loss in your world. Life, is the greatest artist and instructor, why not use it to our benefit and allow ourselves a moment of relief when we can't seem to find it in ourselves in those moments of depression.
I hope my journey brings some light to you and perhaps offers you some insight to your own journey. May the love of creation and the artistic nature be your muse in the days of need!
Warm love and regards
Ann

New watercolor technique to create life like portraits/landscapes

This technique is awesome!! I am going to host a live class at craftylink.com soon. I will post updates when this will be available. In the meantime, enjoy these two portraits of 2 of my 4 dogs.

Gelli Plate Resist technique

Gelli Plate resist technique.. this is actually a fun technique that I enjoyed a lot. I used my own ink I made to get that over the top shimmer look and that duel blended color look. The print with the music, is from the second pull off of the gelli plate using gel medium. I was so impressed that I was still able to see the resist come through from a second pull ( AKA Ghost print).

Young Hands Art

My Niece Grace created this beautiful piece today using a metal sheet, alcohol inks and an embossing folder. It was fantastic to watch her create this wonderful hanging wall art and how she really got involved it the texture and structure of it. Art, the cure to all that ails you ( and it's always nice when a peacock is involved) :)

HELP!!! BUST THIS STASH!!!!

"So you want to do arts and crafts" I was asked, "well,  of course I do" I replied! It all went down hill from there. That was an invitation to shop for supplies like a mad woman who was on her last hurrah, that woman is none other than me.  In my head I thought if I was going to do this, then I better have a well equipped craft room with anything and everything a person could possibly need to fulfill any requests and wants within the arts and crafts community.

Several thousand dollars later ( including those dollar item sales) I was equipped beyond control. From a craft room that was organized to a craft room that is now stuffed and jammed packed with so many supplies that I have only a 2 foot area to walk in and out of ion order to get to my craft table.

Here is how the story goes....After researching project after project, I would order the supplies I needed to create the projects. By the time the supplies got to me in the mail, I had not only forgotten what project they went to, but I had also researched more projects, ordering more supplies. This had gone on for sometime until it has reached the point that I no longer have room to put another supply in and I have forgotten everything I wanted to create.

I'm sure I'm the only one this has ever happened to.. who else in their right mind would ever do such a thing!!    When a person asks me if I have such and such supply, I almost have to laugh and reply with, "yes, of course I have it and most likely I have it in triplicate" lol I really want to meet the people who I have made wealthy and who are traveling to fun exotic places and cruising on fantastic boats from all the supplies I have bought. Maybe they will pity me and take me along with them!

Why do I embarrass myself and put myself out here like this, you may ask? Two reasons, 1, If this has ever happened to you, or you think it could happen to you, there is a community to reach out to that can help, I know you are out there and will have empathy on me and come to my rescue. 2, I am STUCK!! I can no longer focus on my projects due to the fact I have forgotten about most of my supplies that are jammed under something or tucked away where I can't even see them any longer. I am without creativity right now because I am so focused on all these supplies that are piled up around my craft table. I have ran out of shelving, obviously, and I cannot even think as to how to reorganize this mess.

I am sure somewhere there is an Organize this craft room mess reality show. I am a great candidate for this show! Did I happen to mention that now I am creating piles in the garage because there is no more room in my crafting studio? OIIIIII!!!

Here is my plea to all of you... please help me come up with organizing strategies and crafting ideas to rid some of these materials. In turn, I will not order any more crafting supplies until I have depleted some of the PILES and PILES of supplies I already have. You don't have to ask me if I have a certain supply, because I can pretty much guarantee I do. I have everything from textured wall paper for crafts to metal to.. well just about everything.. I could make a list that would take me a year to create. I look like a mini Micheal's art and craft supply store.

Below are some pictures of my craft room. Please inhale first before you look at them and then exhale slowly.. it's the only way you will not faint! lol I yearn to hear from ALL of you.. I know you are out there and are willing to step up and help me! Come forward, show the love and help a girl out!

Ok ready, set, go... Breathe slowly, here are the pictures.

May is a wonderful month for bringing in the "new" New flowers, New grass, New weather, cleaning out closets, and bringing in new organization to your spring cleaning. This months Cloth/Paper Quilt Piece Theme Word/quote is "NEW" when you are making your quilted piece, keep that word in your mind so when you are creating, you can create with a new thought and don't forget to add a quote if you wish, that always makes a piece more inviting to the eye :) http://craftylink.com/group/creatiqueness-break-through-the-silence/forum/topics/art-journal-paper-quilt

Mixed Media Art Journal Cloth/Paper Quilt

Hello wonderful members, as I was surfing the net I came across a wonderful website called fineartamerica.com I was intrigued at a piece of art they have for sale there called paper quilting. I started to think how wonderful it is when a community comes together to create a spectacular piece of art that has many hands and thoughts and energy involved. So why not us!! :)
This is my vision... I would like us all to become a oneness,  creating 6"x 6" pieces of mixed media art with a theme every 2 weeks to send to one another on a piece of cloth or paper. The type of cloth or paper is completely up to you, just remember the ultimate result is being able to attach the pieces together to create a wall quilt.
I have given a sample of inspiration below from the fineartamerica.com website. This piece of art just struck my whole inner being and I feel that art is just that, inspiration to others! I do not want to us to copy this piece of art, rather use it as inspiration for our own mixed media journal quilt wall display.
I am VERY excited about this project and I know you will be too! What a wonderful way for us to have a piece of one another's art as a display of energy! This is how it will work... The first 2 weeks the theme will be GRATITUDE. on a piece of 6" x 6" piece of cloth or paper we will journal whatever comes to mind and soul for the word Gratitude. We will send out pieces out ( like a swap) to one another until we all have enough pieces to create our keepsake mixed media art journal quilt. Please click on this link to take you to this wonderful Journey http://craftylink.com/group/creatiqueness-break-through-the-silence/forum/topics/art-journal-paper-quilt

My Tribute to Easter with my 3-D Easter Egg background. This background was so simple to make, Just trace around any object and start with straight lines until you get to the outlined object. Once you get to the tracing marks create a bridge effect, making your straight lines now curved UPWARD slightly. Do this through out the whole picture and you will end up with a 3-D effect. Enjoy!!

Creatiqueness Calendar for Craftylink.com

Google Calendar
Eggcellent Swap

These cute little eggs were created due to a swap from craftylink.com. They were in perfect timing as I have felt rather egg head-ish lately! lol It's that time of the year when you are ready to have spring at your doorstep and it rains instead and the wind blows a hundred miles per hour and you have to break out the winter attire again. Blah!!
Creating these little fun springy eggs helped that blah dissipate for a short time and bring in some mental sunshine. These were easy to do, some plastic eggs from the dollar store and some cute tape, a couple glittered flowers, some words and some ( whoot whoot) Mardi Gras beads, nope, I didn't earn them, but nonetheless they are fun and you have yourself a cute spring time egg. :)

New beginnings

Here it goes, Something that has scared the daylights out of me is the very thing I am facing head on,  (BLOGGING) Yikes!! I cannot begin to express the fear I have about blogging and all that you have to learn and do to have a nice blog. That's not to say I have not viewed MANY blogs on the net and have enjoyed them so much. Blogs have helped me expand my creative horizons.,I will always be grateful for them.

This is my first Blog entry ever, and I have to say, as I am writing this first entry, It's not so bad really. I know how to type, I know how to express myself, but Oh My Goodness, what about when it comes time to blog one of my creations. ( The horror of that thought) At my age of 50, almost 51 I had succumbed to the past lingering thoughts that pen and paper and the Postal system was a great way to communicate for  anyone, not so much any more.

I am reminded of my mother when she, in her 70's said, "look I am texting now" and all I could do was giggle at her since I had been texting for several years and thought, well anyone can text. I am sure to her, she didn't have those same sentiments when she did her first text. ( Mom I now know how you felt) :)

For those who read this, and for those who understand what I am feeling at this moment, I salute you! If you have taken the blogging world by the horns, then you are my hero's. So, onward I go... I hope to see many people ( not too many at first, that might send me into a cardiac arrest) ha!

See you soon
Ann
